Last week social media accounts claimed that Eastern Libya Cyrenaica should be annexed to Greece, its “original land”. How did this news spread, and where did it come from?
The story started from the account @631210D, or Δ.Κ which stated that if elections were to be cancelled, Eastern Libya should claim its independence and be annexed to Greece.
This account is not real. It uses the picture of a local council member from Belgium David Kyriakidis
Yet the story circulated quickly, including on pages of “news agencies” such as Wajak, Sidra Hadath, Tobruk Now, or the “Fighting Electronic Terrorism” page, which counts over 184k followers. “Libya Today”, close to the former regime and run from the UK, also shared the story.
